Wow! I can't believe I found this blog!

I worked at Tabu in the mid-70's, and still remember it so well. I LOVED the Tabu Room!

I worked there as a cocktail waitress during the long winter months of 1977 / 78, when sometimes during the week there might only be one or two tables with customers. Many nights it felt like Ed Hagen was giving me a private concert... he and I became close friends. He always had a friendly greeting for me, and whatever he needed throughout the night I was quick to fetch. And oh my gosh, his music was absolutely mesmerizing.

And Mikki -I was just thinking of you the other day! Do you remember me? You came to my house for my baby boy's birthday (Woody). We lived in a little house on Deere Street.

Wow... so many memories. I didn't work at Strictly Tabu for very long, but the time I was there holds some of my fondest memories.

I came to Dallas in '76 and the TaBu Room (none of us ever called it "Strictly") was always a great place to bring out-of-towners, if only to show them that the city wasn't only kickers and disco. And even for those of us who were only moderately into jazz, old Ed's vibes could make you a believer.

I found this blog after agreeing to design a cd cover for a friend who once played there occasionally and is including some of his TaBu jams on personal album.

I'd like to have the old sign in the background, but I see nothing online that shows the logo or anything. Just from memory, it looked something like this: http://www.overtondesign.net/tabu.html

Anybody got any links, photos or memorabilia to make it accurate?

I played the Tabu at least a couple of times in the time period between maybe 1968 - to 1974?; (I was at NTSU/Music School until about 1968, and gigged around Dallas with various bands until I left the state around 1974.) But I was going through some memorabilia on my shelf a week ago and found an old original menu from the Tabu Room (Hamburgers: .50 cents; 8 oz Filet Mignon: $2.25, beer: .60 cents, etc.) I've PDF'd it and would love to send it to you, but there doesn't appear to be any way to attach files or upload...

Email me if you're interested...

I was known as Ruthie, one of the cocktail waitresses, 1976 -1983. I later worked at Poor David’s Pub when it was on Greenville Ave. I miss all the people from that time. I no longer live in Dallas, and I’m an RN now. If any Tabu family or friend wants to reconnect, I’m on Facebook. But it looks like this blog might be inactive now; I just stumbled upon it. Love to all! Ruthie xx
